College newspapers remain an invaluable medium for students to express their opinions, as well as for our writers and editors to gain firsthand experience in journalism.
In a time when newspapers across the nation are shrinking and some shutting down completely, we are fortunate to have the majority of the Cento’s operating expenses funded by the College’s Student Government Association. While advertising and subscriptions are an important aspect of our paper, we would be unable to function on these resources alone.
This year, with SGA’s financial support, we are excited to explore the possibilities of web journalism. This issue marks the first live release of our online newspaper. We are confident that the website will enable the Cento to become a more transparent and interactive venue for the student voice. The site will also enable the Cento to reach a wider audience, whether it be alums, students studying abroad or individuals outside of Centre.
Some features of the site include: blogs, expanded opportunities for photojournalism, as well as the integration of social media.
The site is reliant on user interaction, so if you have not already done so, sign up as a user so you can favorite and comment on stories and photographs, as well as receive e-alerts when articles are added.
We will continue to uphold the tradition of a print newspaper. This is just a starting point — there is an incredible potential for the growth of the site.
In the meantime, please be patient with us while we navigate our first independent website. If you have any questions or suggestions about the site or the Cento in general, please feel free to contact Editor-in-Chief Marla Sweitzer or Web Designer Eric Wesolowski.
