RICE Art Show exhibits students’ talent across campus
The history of art shows at Centre is a long one. “The student art exhibit has been an annual tradition at Centre for several decades at least,” Associate Professor of Art Judith Jia said. “When RICE was implemented a few years ago, it made sense to include the art exhibit as part of the creative endeavors section.”
Hamilton brings Lincoln to Centre
Ed Hamilton, a Kentucky artist asked to construct the Lincoln statue, is about to send the clay version of the statue off to be cast in metal. But what does the statue look like? “In the last month, he’s done a good job of making Lincoln younger,” Vice President for College Relations Richard Trollinger said. “You know he didn’t have a beard until he was president. This is [a] young Lincoln.”

Recently, I had the opportunity to visit the Richard B. Freeman Gallery at the University of Kentucky’s Singletary Center for the Arts, where a new exhibit had opened featuring the work of the photographer Jerry Spagnoli.

The Basics: Junior’s style a ‘patchwork’ of European inspiration
Your fortnightly dose of creativity (also know as “the basics”) was inspired by junior history major, Sara Muren. When I first asked Muren to be a part of my project, she demurely asserted that she did not have style. I was certain that she was being modest, because I have been lucky enough to witness her wardrobe creations every Monday, Wednesday and Friday in psychology class.
The Basics: Academic’s style is a family affair, rooted in the classics
Our second installment of “the basics” is from visiting psychology professor Aaron Godlaski. Asserting that his style is a familial affair, he credits his classic perspective on style to the teachings of his grandmother, who would always recount stories of a time when being a gentleman dictated never leaving the house without a hat and tie.
A.B. Rushing, ’07, defies The Rules with Aegon show
Somewhere in the world, a collection of brightly painted orbs sit suspended in a tiered formation on a group of menacing black cylinders jutting up from the bottom of a large glass box. The glass box is rapidly filling with water that is cascading through a hole in one of the orbs, and running down over the surfaces of the others, threatening to submerge the entire enclosed area. This is not the setting for the action-packed, underwater battle conclusion of my science-fiction screenplay. This is one of the several pieces in Anne Rushing’s glass exhibition, The Rules (I’ve Just Made Up).
From ‘toons to realism, junior’s art matures
Junior Tyler Wilkinson, studio art and history double major, may not be able to fly, but he does have some super artistic ability. His love for art began as a small child when he drew superheroes, action figures and cartoons from his favorite television shows. His current work, however, is a little more down-to-earth than men in capes.
The “Drawing League” brings realist art to Centre
The AEGON Gallery at the Jones Visual Arts Center is currently featuring an exhibit on realist art depicting the human form. “Drawing League,” the title of the show, is the symbolic representation of an artistic group from Cincinnati that has been drawing together for quite some time.
