Athletes stay in shape while studying abroad

One of the main attractions of Centre College is its extensive study abroad program. Over 85 percent of students have studied abroad for some amount of time while at Centre. Some of these students are also athletes who must be ready to resume rigorous practice schedules when they return to Centre.

The burning question: What do Centre sports teams do on away trips?

A lot can happen during a weekend at Centre, but what happens during an away trip for a sports team? While posing this question to many different athletes at Centre, I received an assortment of answers. Senior Marcus Neimann, a member of the track and football teams, talked about track away trips, saying, “We do different things for different trips.”

Danville has a “Staff Infection”

Centre faculty & staff dominate IM Softball

Lurking in intramural (IM) softball’s B league is a team of champions. Undefeated this year and last year and tournament champions for the preceding three years, the staff team has been blowing the competition out of the water for quite a while. Intrigued, I set out to discover the secret to their fantastic success.

Colonel for life: Coach Jessica Chisley

2004 Centre College graduate makes Centre Dear proud even after matriculation

Centre College is known for producing bright, talented young adults that go on to make Centre Dear proud in one way or another. Centre is also renowned for producing the most loyal alumni base in the nation, as Centre grads always find ways to “give back” to the first continuous academic institution west of the Alleghenies.

Fall sports return early with spring training

Colonels prepare to contend for fall 2012 SAA Championships

Sports enthusiasts and athletes know that even when the season is over, it never really ends. That’s part of the attitude that has Centre’s fall athletes out on their practice fields on campus now as spring training begins. Athletes on both the men’s and women’s soccer teams and women’s field hockey team have laced up their cleats and are ready for the nontraditional season or spring training season to begin.

Swimming sends four to Nationals

Centre’s Swimming and Diving team sent four swimmers to the NCAA Division III National Meet on March 21-24 in Indianapolis, Ind. Each class was represented, as senior Colleen Maggard, junior Holly Oatman, sophomore Clark Weber, and first-year Hadley Judson competed in the 800-yard freestyle relay. The swimmers achieved a qualifying time during the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Championship meet in January.

Don't repeat the past!

There are some people in this world who love sports. They live, eat, and breathe sports. Sometimes these people are athletes, but sometimes they are just Average Joes who love a good sports game. There are also people who think that sports are about as fun/entertaining/exciting as getting stabbed in the hand with a toothpick, and, of course, there are thousands of people who fall somewhere between these two extremes...

Centre College Track and Field teams run the SCAC, literally

Coming off of a record-setting indoor season, the track and field team has blasted into the outdoor season with competitive meets at Rhodes College, Hanover College, and here at Centre College thus far this season. The results of each of these meets look promising as the conference championships near. The team has broken 15 school records in the indoor season alone, and has already demolished or come close to breaking more in the outdoor.

Division III Week celebrated by honoring all student-athletes, new Southern Athletic Association

As members of the Centre College community, we often express our support and appreciation of our sports teams and student-athletes. The NCAA developed Division III Week to honor those student-athletes and their schools. This week (April 8-15) marks the first ever NCAA Division III week, and, in an attempt to recognize this, the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, along with Coach Chafin, Centre College Director of Athletics and Recreation, wish to explain the Southern Athletic Association (SAA), of which Centre is a charter member.

Lax on Lax on Lax: Colonels Win

Constant victories by Centre College Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse (CMLax and CWLax, respectively) demonstrate both teams’ high ambitions for their second seasons. The men’s team is currently undefeated, with a 4-0 record and the women’s team started strong with a 6-1 record. 2011 gave the teams experience, and they are back in 2012 with closer team dynamics and a desire to make the program’s second season successful.

Dan Graber's Career: Creative Coaching

Often, the road to finding one’s career can be more winding and arduous than Centre’s notorious home cross country course at Danville High School. However, for Assistant Coach of Centre’s Cross Country and Track & Field Dan Graber, finding his career has been much more natural. “I just ended up on this path,” he said. “I think it’s the best way to use my skills and talents and to follow my passion.”

Does baseball get any better than this?

“Hello again, everybody. It’s a bee-yooo-tiful day for baseball.” I know, I know … It’s March. It’s still basketball season. The NBA is just halfway through its season, and March Madness is about to begin. No doubt, you’re still consumed with “Linsanity,” you still get pumped when Blake Griffin slams a dunk so powerfully that it makes Joseph Stalin stir fearfully in his grave, and you still hop uncontrollably off the couch when Anthony Davis blocks his 27th shot of the game, regardless of whether or not you dump your entire bag of Grippo’s all over the freshly vacuumed carpet.

Centre College faculty (finally!) reveal favorite sports, athletes, teams

There are many fundamental questions in the universe. How did we get here? What is our purpose in life? What do professors do with their spare time?

Prewitt and seven fellow seniors boost Lady Colonel Basketball

Four years ago, the Centre College women’s basketball team won only seven games. The team lacked consistency, a viable and potent offensive threat, and strong leadership. That season, the Lady Colonels lost 16 games, with ten of those losses coming in conference play.
